Feeling overwhelmed?

We’ve got some tips for avoiding burnout

Good morning! It’s that time of year when you don’t really need the double-shot caramel brulée latte to kick into high-gear. I’d bet you’re already buzzing, what with holiday parties, winter traditions, and end-of-year madness. I’ve always loved December, but it can be a lot. And for some of us, it’s the hardest month of the year.

So today, we’re talking about managing feelings of burnout for anyone struggling with lack of time, stress, fatigue, or just life in general. You’ve got this 💪

A note—if you’re really struggling or aren’t feeling like yourself, ask for help. Free resources are available. You’re not alone. 💗

When Coffee Doesn’t Do the Trick…

It might be burnout.

There’s feeling tired and then there’s feeling tired. We’ve heard a lot more about burnout the past few years, and with good reason—more of us are realizing the toll life’s stresses can take on our minds, bodies, homes, and professional lives.

So let’s talk about burnout…and importantly? What to do when you feel it creeping in.

What exactly is burnout? It’s exhaustion with the volume turned way up. It drains us of our strength and motivation, both physically and emotionally, after prolonged stress or frustration. And it doesn’t discriminate—burnout can affect any person in any situation, from kids at school to adults at work, leaving a trail of the “mehs” wherever it goes.

And for parents and caretakers? It's everywhere. Some two-thirds of parents have felt burnout. And women, people with anxiety, and parents of children with anxiety or ADHD tend to be more at risk for burnout.

Second toddler ear infection of the season? Unexpected need for new tires on the car? In-laws staying with you over the holidays? Life is full of curveballs, but with practice, we can learn to keep those unexpected stressors from totally burning (and bumming) us out.

Some tips for avoiding holiday season burnout:

  • Ask for help. This is a biggie, and I’m willing to guess that most of us aren’t super great at it, either. But a simple “can you help me with this?” goes a long way—and there’s no shame in needing support.

  • Do the right things. You know what they are. Get 7–9 hours of sleep. Move your body for 20–30 minutes a day. Drink 8–10 glasses of water. These small things are more important than you realize to stave off burnout.

  • Simplify everything. Do you really need to be the only person at work collecting Toys for Tots? Probably not. Did you schedule all your annual health checks for December? If not essential, push them ahead a month. Does your family care if you spend three full business days on designer gift wrapping? No bows necessary this year. When in doubt, cross it out!

If you know you’ve already reached the point of too much, it’s time to take a step back. Start with the list above, and work on lessening your load. You’re a superhero, but you’re also only human.

TBH, I’ve learned that lesson big time this year as I’ve attempted to juggle parenting, work, and home. There have been times I waited too long to ask for help, but I’m learning! For me, a day away from it all truly helps improve my perspective. I’m so grateful to have people in my corner who support my need for R&R when life gets too overwhelming.

One last thing on burnout: Finding joy in simple things can take the edge off—sipping a steamy hot chocolate, catching up with a beloved friend, or laughing at a silly movie (try this one!). When it comes down to it, leaving the stresses in the past or future and getting into the present moment is the best strategy for shifting your mood and remembering what really matters.
